Belief by John Mayer — My Love Playlist

What do you believe?

Beliefs are powerful. Psychologists have determined that our core beliefs about ourselves and the world develop before age 7. Can you remember what life was like when you were 7?? Do you remember the second grade? What was your family dynamic like? What did your parents teach you about how the world worked? Did any major events happen that changed the way you saw the world? It’s not the events that shape our beliefs, but the stories around the events that shape our core beliefs.  “Belief” by John Mayer is one of my favorites on My Love Playlist, and he perfectly nails down how negative beliefs we’ve held on to for years leads us to sabotage our happiness, our relationships, and fight wars we don’t even need to fight. I love the analogy “like punching underwater…you never can hit who you’re trying for.” Our negative, limiting beliefs make it so hard to move forward and attract the life that we really want to live.

But when we identify those beliefs, take a look at them objectively, identify the source of those beliefs, then we can transform them. Especially in regards to relationships, we build up beliefs based on our past relationships. We’re not afraid of love. We’re afraid of being with another asshole again and losing ourselves. If we believe marriage is prison and men are liars and cheaters, that’s what we will find over and over again. “Belief is a beautiful armor, but makes for the heaviest sword” when we’re fighting blindly to defend something that may not be serving us. “If belief is what [you’re] fighting for,” you may be keeping yourself from attracting true love in to your life.

Perhaps your fight is literal. Perhaps your belief is that you were right and your ex was wrong and your fighting never ends. Perhaps you could believe that your ex was the world’s greatest teacher for you, everyone you have ever dated was a teacher, every one you are dating now is a teacher, and none of it was an accident. Perhaps you could lay down your sword and turn your focus inward, healing your wounds and create new beliefs about relationships. Perhaps you could form the beliefs that you were meant to be with a partner who loves you and adores you and cherishes you and YOU are his first priority forever. I didn’t attract a husband like that until I did the work on myself and transformed my beliefs about men and relationships and myself. I don’t attract real love until I stopped fighting my ex, blaming my ex, and being angry at him. Once I transformed limiting, negative beliefs about marriage, men, and myself, I finally attracted the real deal. That’s why I’m writing this blog right now. It’s a strategy; It’s real; It works.

Mamas, transforming your negative beliefs is the KEY to creating the best life and the relationship you deserve. PS if you read this before October 24th, 2020, we’ll be talking all about transforming beliefs at 10am during coffee with Karen. You can find the link on Instagram. It’s Chapter 5 in my book and the longest, most important chapter! Your amazing bad ass husbands on the other side of the work! It’s so worth it.

Will you go down fighting for what you believe?

Is there anyone who ever remembers
Changing their mind from the paint on a sign?
Is there anyone who really recalls ever breaking rank, at all
For something someone yelled real loud, one time?

Oh, everyone believes
In how they think it ought to be
Oh, everyone believes
And they’re not going easily

Belief is a beautiful armor
But makes for the heaviest sword
Like punching underwater
You never can hit who you’re trying for
Some need the exhibition
And some have to know they tried
It’s the chemical weapon for the war that’s ragin’ on inside

Don’t surrender to your limiting beliefs.

Oh, everyone believes
From emptiness to everything
Oh, everyone believes
And no one’s going quietly

We’re never going to win the world
We’re never going to stop the war
We’re never going to beat this, if belief is what we’re fighting for
We’re never going to win the world
We’re never going to stop the war
We’re never going to beat this, if belief is what we’re fighting for

Is there anyone you can remember
Ever surrendered with their life on the line?

We’re never going to win the world
We’re never going to stop the war
We’re never going to beat this, if belief is what we’re fighting for
We’re never going to win the world
We’re never going to stop the war
We’re never going to beat this, if belief is what we’re fighting for

Objectively examine what you believe.

What puts a hundred thousand children in the sand?
Belief can, belief can
What puts the folded flag inside his mother’s hand?
Belief can, belief can
