“Just Hold On” by Steve Aoki and Louis Tomlinson reminds me of that meme with the lion and his cub: “I thought about quitting then I remembered who was watching.” This thought crosses my mind all the time, especially when I’m tired and I wish teenage crisis would take a break for an evening. What do I want my children to say about me when they move out (if they ever move out)? What do I need to teach them in the few short years before they leave? We might not think they are really listening, but they are for sure watching us. Are they going to say that we gave up or that we kept going?

There’s no doubt that 2020 has been full of firsts and challenges like we’ve never faced. But experiencing this year through my 15-year-old daughter’s eyes, I realized that my challenges are nothing compared to how she feels and interprets what she is facing. I just have more practice. She really feels like the world is ending every day. And who is going to help her and coach her through hard challenges if I am exhausted and afraid and stressed? Other 15-year-olds? Yikes. I have to do everything in my power mentally, physically, and spiritually so I can remain calm and help her through whatever comes up.

She’ll never stop having challenges. She’ll just be out on her own. So many chapters have ended so far just in her lifetime. We’ve gone through divorce, moves, changing schools, friendships ending, changing jobs and careers…each time in the moment it feels like it’s all gone wrong, and I remember feeling like I couldn’t handle this pressure of being a single mom and doing it all. “Then the sun goes down, and it comes back up.” I love these lyrics…if it all goes wrong, darling just hold on.
